The Leadership Challenge

The Leadership Challenge is about how leaders mobilize others to want to get extraordinary things done. It's about the practices leaders use to transform values into actions, visions into realities, obstacles into innovations, separateness into solidarity, and risks into rewards. It's about a climate in which people turn challenging opportunities into remarkable successes.

Dear Subscriber,

Get the New Year off on solid footing with targeted training.

Look at things from a new angle. This month TARGET ...  examines your current approach to meeting management. Our Reading Room highlights one of the thoughtful works of Peter Block.

We offer three-hour public workshops, customized specialty sessions, and a three-day retreat to take the Leadership Challenge™ (based on the works of renowned authors James Kouzes and Barry Posner).  There is something for everyone looking for tangible results.

TARGET...Meetings

How much time do you spend in meetings each week?  Is this time productive? The following tips will keep your meetings on target, on task, and on time.

1. Publish an Agenda In Advance
Planning an effective meeting includes publishing an agenda with estimated times for each topic, designated speakers as appropriate and background information if required. Microsoft Word(c) includes an Agenda Wizard that walks you through the process and optionally provides a format for capturing action items and notes.

2. Include the 'Right' People with the 'Right' Skills

Does everyone need to attend this meeting? Or does everyone need to attend the entire meeting? Do you have the correct representation of skills, interests, and ideas?

3. Know the Desired Outcomes
What type of meeting is this intended to be; decision-making, problem-solving, brainstorming, information gathering, social networking, training or project/status report? What specific decisions or actions need to happen by the close of the meeting?

4. Understand the Ground Rules
Make sure everyone is playing with the same rulebook. Meetings start on time, silence mobile devices, everyone is prepared to discuss their area or agenda item, active listening encourages participation, and other ground rules appropriate to your environment.

5. Meet When Necessary

Meet only when necessary and/or for as long as needed.  Question the validity and value of weekly meetings.

The Answer to How Is Yes:
Acting on What Matters
by Peter Block

Peter Block is one of my favorite people. A tall gentle man, his approach to change, leadership, and management is refreshing and revolutionary. "He reframes leadership as the role of social architect where convening, engaging and defining the question replace vision, charisma, and driving change." Peter asserts that we tend to race to the how and not spend sufficient time on the why.

Ask, why are we meeting like this?

Ask, why are we here?

Ask, why, why, why, and why.

Then, the answer to how is yes.
