The Leadership Challenge

The Leadership Challenge is about how leaders mobilize others to want to get extraordinary things done. It's about the practices leaders use to transform values into actions, visions into realities, obstacles into innovations, separateness into solidarity, and risks into rewards. It's about a climate in which people turn challenging opportunities into remarkable successes.

February 2008
Dear Subscriber,

This month TARGETED ...  examines the communication process and the possibilities for miscommunication. Our Reading Room focuses on one of Deborah Tannen's classic works regarding men and women in conversation.

TARGETED...Communication

"The medium is the message"  ~ Marshall McLuhan.

From a scientific lens, the communication process model has the following six components.
  1. a source = You and your brain
  2. an encoder  = How you send the message (verbal, written, sign language)
  3. a message = the intended message
  4. a channel (medium) = how the message is sent + noise and background information
  5. a decoder  = translation of the message (eyes, ears of the receiver)
  6. a receiver  = The person you are communicating with
As you can imagine, there are opportunities for the intended message to go astray at every step.
