Systems Thinking
Peter Senge's book, The Fifth Discipline (1990), and its companion, The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook
(1994), are seminal works about Systems Thinking and its application to organizations. Senge
identifies five "component technologies" that are the basis for building learning organizations (and
systems thinking in individuals). Systems Thinking principles are concerned with a shift of mind
from seeing parts to seeing wholes, from seeing people as helpless reactors to seeing them as
active participants in shaping their reality, from reacting to the present to creating the future.
